Wilderness Camping Trip Spring 2014

Jay took us for a week long camping trip in the mountains. I though I bought a disposable camera, but I had bought film (really who still sells film) instead. So I had to buy this cheap-O camera from the dollar store. It didn't work so well for what I wanted, but at least we have some photos.

Here are 5 of the most memorable experiences from each of us:

Elliott:

1. Cut his finger with a knife while whittling a stick 
2. Pooped in a hole
3. Slept in late in the tent
4. Didn't get to see the Stumphouse Tunnel
5. Was able to cut open (clean) a fish and play with its eyeballs

Beth:

1. We had a toilet to sit on for going to the bathroom. This consisted of a 6 gallon bucket with a toilet set as a lid. 
2. We ate candy!!!
3. We got to go hiking
4. We could sleep in the tent
5. We went swimming in the river. It was so very cold!
6. Sleeping next to Dad for warmth.

Josh:

1. Reading Tennis Shoes Amongst the Nephites out loud as a family in the car on the way there and back 
2. Sleeping in the tent
3. Walking in the river against the current
4. Tricking Dad and walking through the mud - Dad thought he had his good tennis shoes on, Josh was actually wearing his water shoes.
5. Tricking Mom with the hatchet - While chopping a log, Josh suddenly calls out "Ow! My hand!" Mom heart attack ensues. Josh laughs..."Just kidding!" Mom was not amused!

Mom

1. Caught 6 river trout
1. lost one
2. one was a throwback
3. we ate the rest
2.  couldn't feel my backside at night because it was so cold and was not very comphy sleeping on the ground. I am too old for that anymore.
3. liked seeing the waterfall
4. disliked the steep hike up to the falls
5. Enjoyed using my She-Rah survival skills - Thanks Nileen for teaching me to be an awesome camper!
6. I enjoyed teaching Joshua how to rig a pole
7. I hated what seemed like a million snagged lines in the river.

Dad

1. Enjoyed watching Mom fish and eating fish almost every day
2. Enjoyed how we were secluded most of the week.
3. Was glad that Mom and the kids didn't cry MUTINY on him. He was proud at how well we (the city crew) all adjusted.
4. Was happy he still had bush skills. My man has mad bush skills. He kept us safe and comfy the entire trip.
5. He wasn't happy that we didn't make it in as far as he wanted.....but really Jay, that was a hike with all that stuff. If we had gone in farther, we would have died! We packed too much stuff and our city crew did not have enough experience.
6. Jay thought Beth's night time antics were cute. She asked hom to warm her face with his hands because it was cold.
7. We had no watches. There was no concept of time. Jay loved it, the kids and I missed the clocks.
8. Watching the kids try to get the weather channel on their walkie-talkies by putting them in their ears and up their noses to get better reception.

Garden update

Still no wheat straw bales. I am trying in containers and it just isn't going so well. I blame my busy schedule and the cooler March we've had. Hopefully the warm temps that have already shown themselves this month will be salvation to my poor little garden. Most of the plants have sprouted and are almost ready to thin.I quickly am realizing this is my last year for a garden of this scale. Next year I don't know what I will do as we have to get the yard re-seeded before we move.

Waiting to see if the strawberries will come back as good as last year.

This broccoli I am a little worried about. Hope it can hold on.

Jenny an me go together like peas and carrots. Time to thin the carrots.

Cabbage is in the same boat with the broccoli. Hope it will be okay.

Lettuce to thin and celery waiting to grow. This is my first time with celery.

New wood container a neighbor gave me for more garden veggies....corn this year?

Baby tomatoes

Basil, and some more baby tomatoes and artichokes. Still waiting for the artichokes to catch up to the other plants

Finished weekend project planters. Flowers love them!

Got three of these beauties a couple of weekends ago. So pretty.

Onions green or yellow I forgot which so I made a guess.

Last of the blueberries bushes. Lots of flowers though.
